TRANSLATIONS:

~ ‘Carga y descarga’ followed by times, means that during the hours shown, the space may only be used for loading and unloading, but at other times may be used for parking

~ ‘Vado permanent’ Gual permanent normally found on gates and garage doors means KEEP CLEAR.  It is a legal sign and should be strictly observed or your car could be towed away.  Also, be careful not to park where the pavement is painted red and white

Many infringements carry ‘on the spot’ fines by the Traffic Police

LOCAL CUSTOMS:

~ FLASHING HEADLIGHTS – In Britain, another motorist flashing his headlights usually means he is giving you right of way, though it could be a warning.  In Menorca, flashing lights are ALWAYS a warning and must only be used with discretion.

~ RAISED LEFT HAND – If you see a motorcyclist or cyclist raise his left hand in front of you, this usually means that he is turning RIGHT, but take care as the rider may not be a local, in which case he may turn LEFT!

There are at present 3 Gasolineras in Mahon, 1 on the Sant Lluis road, 1 in Sant Lluis, 1 in Alaior, 1 at Es Mercadal, 1 on the Fornells road, 1 in Ferreries, 3 in the Ciutadella area and 1 double station between Mahon and Alaior.  These are all self-service only; you pay at the office

Lead-free Petrol (gasolina sin plomo) is available at all garages
